About the Tip Calculator
This tool works out a tip on a bill and, when you are dining in a group, splits the total evenly across everyone at the table. Enter the bill amount, the tip percentage you want to leave, and the number of people, and it returns the tip, the grand total, and each person's share.
How the tip is calculated
The tip is the bill amount multiplied by the tip percentage divided by one hundred. That tip is added to the bill to give the total, which is then divided by the number of people for the per-person amount. Because the math is simple, the value of the tool is in doing it quickly and accurately at the table, without fumbling with mental arithmetic or a phone calculator while everyone waits.
Tipping conventions vary
How much to tip depends heavily on where you are and the type of service. In some countries a tip of fifteen to twenty percent is customary and expected; in others a service charge is already included and additional tipping is optional or token; and in some places tipping is uncommon altogether. The default percentage here is only a starting point, so adjust it to match local custom and the quality of service you received.
Tipping before or after tax
People differ on whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax bill. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is slightly more economical and arguably more logical, since tax is not part of the service, but many simply tip on the final bill for convenience. The calculator works on whatever bill figure you enter, so use whichever base you prefer and the result follows.
Splitting the bill fairly
The even split assumes everyone shares the total equally, which works well when people ordered roughly similar amounts. If one person ordered far more, an even split may feel unfair, and you might prefer to divide the bill by what each person actually consumed and then apply the tip proportionally. For a simple shared meal, though, dividing the total by the headcount is quick and usually accepted.
Tips
Round the per-person amount up to a convenient figure to make settling easier and to avoid leaving anyone short. For working out percentages in other contexts, the Percentage Calculator is more flexible, and to add tax to a bill use the GST Calculator.
