How to use the Online Calculator

Doing a calculation

  • Tap the digits to enter your first number.
  • Press an operator: + to add, − to subtract, × to multiply, or ÷ to divide.
  • Enter the second number, then press = to see the result.
  • The small line above the main display shows the number and operator you have entered so far.

Chaining calculations

  • You can keep calculating without pressing = each time. For example, pressing 2 + 3 + 4 = gives 9.
  • Each time you press a new operator, the running total is worked out and carried forward.
  • This calculator works left to right, so 2 + 3 × 4 gives 20 (it adds first, then multiplies). For order-of-operations maths, use the Scientific Calculator instead.

Correcting mistakes

  • ⌫ (backspace) removes the last digit you typed.
  • CE clears just the number you are currently entering, keeping the rest of the calculation.
  • C clears everything and starts fresh.
  • ± switches the current number between positive and negative.

The decimal point

  • Press the . key to enter decimals, for example 9.5.
  • Results show decimals only when needed: 10 ÷ 4 shows 2.5, while 10 ÷ 2 shows 5, not 5.0.
  • Dividing by zero is not allowed and shows “Error”; press C to clear and continue.

Using the memory

  • M+ adds the number on screen to the memory store.
  • M− subtracts the number on screen from memory.
  • MR recalls the stored number back onto the display.
  • MC clears the memory. An M shows at the top whenever memory holds a value.

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Type numbers and . directly on your keyboard.
  • Use + − * / for the operators and Enter or = to calculate.
  • Backspace deletes a digit; Escape clears everything.

Frequently asked questions

What can I enter?

Numbers and the operators + − × (use *) ÷ (use /) with brackets.

Does it follow order of operations?

Yes — multiplication and division resolve before addition and subtraction.

Can it do percentages?

For percentage-specific work, use the percentage calculator.

Why Invalid?

The expression contains a character that is not a number or basic operator.

Where does it run?

In your browser only.

About the Online Calculator

This is a fast, no-frills calculator for everyday arithmetic. Type a full expression, such as 125 times 4 plus 50, and get the answer instantly, with the standard order of operations applied automatically.

A calculator that respects order of operations

Unlike a basic button calculator that processes each operation as you press it, this tool evaluates a whole expression at once, following the mathematical order of operations. That means multiplication and division are resolved before addition and subtraction, and you can use brackets to control the order precisely. So 2 plus 3 times 4 correctly gives 14, not 20, because the multiplication happens first. This matters for any calculation with more than one operation, where a left-to-right button calculator would give the wrong answer.

How to enter expressions

Type your calculation as you would write it, using plus and minus signs, an asterisk for multiplication, and a slash for division. Use brackets to group parts that should be calculated first. Because you enter the entire expression before calculating, you can see and check the whole thing, which makes errors easier to catch than with a running button calculator where intermediate steps vanish.

Why an expression calculator is better for multi-step sums

For a single operation, any calculator works. But real calculations often chain several steps, and that is where entering a full expression shines. You avoid the rounding and re-entry errors that creep in when you calculate one piece, write it down, and type it back in. Seeing the complete expression also documents what you actually computed, so you can verify the logic, not just the final number.

Common uses

This calculator suits quick everyday sums: splitting a bill, working out a total, checking a figure, or any arithmetic that is a little too involved for mental maths but does not need scientific functions. It is the digital equivalent of jotting a sum on paper, but faster and without arithmetic slips.

Privacy and related tools

Calculations run entirely in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere. For advanced functions like roots, powers, logarithms, and trigonometry, use the Scientific Calculator, for working with percentages the Percentage Calculator, and for statistics the Mean, Median & Mode Calculator. Results appear instantly.
