Frequently asked questions
WebP for the smallest web files, PNG for transparency and graphics, JPEG for universal photo compatibility, GIF for simple animations or legacy use.
Yes. JPEG does not support transparency, so transparent areas become white. Use PNG or WebP to keep transparency.
Converting to a lossy format like JPEG or WebP applies compression; converting to PNG is lossless. Either way the dimensions are unchanged.
Yes, this tool converts in any direction between the supported formats.
No. They are processed on a secure server and deleted automatically within an hour.
About the Image Converter
This tool changes an image from one file format to another — for example a PNG to a JPEG, or an old format to modern WebP — while keeping the same dimensions. Different formats suit different jobs, and converting lets you pick the right one for where the image will be used.
Understanding the formats
JPEG is the standard for photographs, giving small files but no transparency. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, making it ideal for logos, icons, screenshots, and graphics with sharp edges, though files are larger. WebP is a modern format that produces smaller files than both JPEG and PNG at comparable quality and supports transparency, which makes it the best all-round choice for the web. GIF is limited to 256 colours and is mainly used for simple animations or legacy compatibility. BMP is an uncompressed format occasionally needed by specific software.
Why convert
You convert when the format you have is not the format you need. A designer might export PNGs that you want as smaller WebP files for a website. A photo saved as a large PNG should usually be a JPEG or WebP. A transparent logo saved as JPEG will have lost its transparency and may need to be sourced again as PNG. Converting to the appropriate format keeps quality where it matters and file size down where it counts.
What conversion does to quality and transparency
Converting to a lossless format like PNG does not degrade the image. Converting to a lossy format like JPEG or WebP applies compression, which is usually invisible at good quality settings. The one thing to watch is transparency: converting a transparent image to JPEG fills the transparent areas with white, because JPEG cannot store transparency. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead.
Privacy and limits
Your image is uploaded securely, converted, and offered for download, then deleted from the server automatically within an hour. The maximum upload size is 25 MB. To reduce file size, use the Image Compressor; to change dimensions, use the Image Resizer.
